MJ is a cat lover. She relates to them in a lot of ways. Sometimes she says “Cats are people.” When I asked what she meant by that she explained that they are independent, they live along side us and not just follow us the way dogs do. Nothing against dogs, but I can see what she means.
She can be very cat-like herself… the way she takes frequent naps, stretches out on the floor, shows her affection, and of course, displays insatiable curiosity. There’s a cute book called All Cats Have Asperger’s Syndrome, by Kathy Hoopmann, which combines photos of cats with information about Asperger’s syndrome and why people with it are different. It’s a fun way of helping people understand why kids with Asperger’s have such unique qualities.
This week, while we are waiting for Service Source to complete their profiles for the Pathways to Careers program, MJ has been particularly cat-like. Without the pressure of school, she has been very busily building her toolbox, working on her electrical projects with arduino parts, and programming software to get them to function. How she does all of that without anyone showing her is impressive to the rest of us. We know she can look things up on the internet but her vision and ability to connect all of the dots is such a gift. And often she works late into the night because she’s nocturnal, just like a cat.
Cats also have a sixth sense of knowing who to invite in. I think MJ shares that sense, while I am praying for guidance there. We are slowly building our community of safe people. We’re carefully sharing our story with those who can be empathetic and sensitive to our unique situation. It is disheartening, disgusting even, that people are so unaccepting and unforgiving of transgender people. We are fortunate that this issue is being openly discussed now and maybe in time we won’t have to worry about who knows what we are dealing with. I continue to pray for those around us to open their hearts and minds and not be judgmental. I pray they will have compassion and will at least try to educate themselves before they say anything hurtful.
So as we continue to wait for the profiles I have to keep reminding myself to be patient. Though it feels like nothing is happening, we know that things are being worked on by Service Source. And God is working all of this out in His way and in His time. He is working on our hearts, building our character, and bringing life from the rubble. I’ll just have to hang out like a cool cat.
Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!
